fertile plain of Marathon, Attica

a
natural place for the establishment and development of human activity from
prehistoric to Roman times. Here on this
plain the battle between the Athenians and the Persians was fought in 490
B.C. To this great event Marathon, Attica area owes its worldwide fame and
its important place in the conscience of the ancient Greeks.
The famous Marathon Tomb was raised over the graves of the 192 Athenians
who died in the battle and whose remains were buried here after
their
cremation.
